Spring has Sprung

With spring showers, sunshine, colorful flowers and blossoming trees comes important homeowner maintenance this season! Spring is the perfect time to make-over your home, check for any damage that may have been caused during the wintertime, and prepare your home for the heat of summer. Both inside and out, spring is a popular time to refresh, air things out, freshen your home with a deep cleaning, eliminate unused items, reorganize closets/storage spaces, and check home maintenance items off the To Do List.

Here is a handy checklist as you undergo spring maintenance:

  • Clean out gutters and downspouts. Repair/seal any leaks.

  • Check roof to ensure there is no damage to shingles, vents and rubber boots are not cracked or broken, and no leaks appear to be present.

  • Clean windows, replace tattered screens, and clean window tracks.

  • Check doors to ensure weather stripping is still in good shape and minimal light is visible around the door frame.

  • Check that no water is pooling anywhere around the perimeter of the home.

  • Call an HVAC technician to have your A/C system serviced and cleaned.

  • Trim all foliage around your home to ensure bushes/plants aren't touching the outside of the home.

  • Replace furnace filter and air return filters inside home.

  • Quick attic check to ensure no signs of new leaks, pests, or issues are present.

  • Crawl space check to make sure no standing water, evidence of mold, or issues are present.

  • Open crawl space vents to ensure proper air flow and ventilation.

  • Clean out dryer ducts.

  • In April, start up sprinkler system, check for broken heads and system leaks, clean out filters and adjust heads to ensure proper coverage.

  • Aerate and fertilize lawn and landscaping bushes, trees, and plants.

  • Check exterior siding for any damage caused over winter.

  • Call pest control company to spray for insects and spiders.

  • Check fire extinguisher's expiration date. Replace if necessary.

  • Declutter house and garage - donate unwanted items.

  • Clear out garden beds and get soil ready for planting in later spring months.

  • Clear off patio and get it ready for springtime enjoyment.
